Metamorphosis Monday

This is my first time to play in Susan's Met Monday & I'm late coming to the party....please forgive me!

Mine is just a small make-over but it fits in the category, I think. This is what I started with...a cheap silverplated award tray that somebody was given. I found it @ a thrift store so they obviously weren't too thrilled w/ it. ;o)

Course it is from 1988 so maybe they were proud enough of their first place trophy, to hang onto it for 20 years.

I hit it w/ some chalkboard paint (I used spray because that's all that Hobby Lobby had & I was too impatient to wait until I could get to another store) & look how cute it is now!

I've been asked several times how I spray painted the tray, leaving the frame silver. I taped off the edges w/ painter's tape (using a spatula to make sure the tape got in the "seam" tightly), not being concerned about staying in line. Then I took an exacto knife & trimmed the tape along where I wanted. The "seam" in the tray made it really easy to follow w/ the blade. There are a couple of "blurps" in it but they are very, very minor. I was being a little anal about them until I saw trays in antique stores done this way. You would not believe how sloppy they were! I seriously wouldn't display them in my own home much less try to charge money for them! Maybe spray paint versus a brush was the way to go after all.

Well, I better get my duff out of this chair & onto some projects so that I can play in Met Mondays more.... be sure & tell Susan thanks for hosting!

  15. Cami...totally too cool! I've never seen this done before! I have however seen people take vintage black and whites and some how apply them to the silver pieces, add antique buttons/ribbon., and they look pretty cool too. This is just very creative! LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT! ;) ~CC Catherine

  18. I love silver & this is a great use of a piece! How did you paint it tho? Spray paint? If so, how do you keep it away from the border? Lots of taping, I'm assuming. Love the cherub candleholder, too!

  27. What a great idea. I have a large square silver serving tray that I won at a silent auction. I loved the side and handles but over the years the inside has gotten very tarnished, scratched and just plain ugly. I have it on my kitchen table right now trying to figure out what to do with it. I think you just read my mind! This is it. I'll post a picture when I'm finished so you can see it. Peggy

  29. Cami, thanks for the comment and you are absolutely right...there is not much cuter than a Shih-Tzu puppy or even full grown one. I had a couple of Shih-Tzus about 10 years ago. After my sweet Precious and Chuee went to the Rainbow Bridge, I decided to try a short-haired breed. I love my dogs short or long hair...just don't know what is worse, having dogs that shed or having dogs that have to be groomed every 6-8 weeks! It was sure hard giving that sweet puppy back to my neice...it was love at first sight!

By the way, I love what you did with the silver tray -- too cute! I think I'll start looking for a tray!

    hugs~
